Disability Alliance has stepped in to fill part of the breach left by the closure of the charity Skill, the National Bureau for Disabled Students, which went into administration in April of this year.

Skill was set up in 1974 to promote equality for disabled people in education, training and employment. It’​s closure was sudden, although the charity’​s website still remains online with a large amount of downloadable information available.

Two former Skill staff members have joined Disability Alliance to provide a telephone helpline, email support and factsheets.

The new service is being funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. This does raise concerns, however, about the increasingly large proportion of Disability Alliance’​s income which comes directly or indirectly from government departments.
