The Times reports today that the government has decided not to remove the mobility component of disability living allowance (DLA), or PIP as it will be from 2013 from state-funded care home residents.

The government had proposed to remove the mobility component in its Comprehensive Spending Review in October 2010. Its proposal was based on the premise that it would remove what the government perceived as an overlap of public funds.

Following representations by many disability organisations and the findings of the Low Review, which disputed the government’s contention that payment of the mobility component overlapped with local authority funding and concluded that the loss of the mobility component would significantly impact on the ability of a disabled person to remain independent ,the government for once appears to have seen sense.
