Hello, I'm new to this and this is the first time I've posted. My son is disabled and has been claiming dla since very young. He is coming up to his 16th birthday and his dla is up for renewal the form said if he couldn't look after his own affairs through physical or mental disabilities to put someone down as an appointee, he is physically disabled and would have trouble filling out forms, walking etc, so i put myself down. I've had a call to say someone will come round to make sure he needs somebody to act as an appointee as this is usually only done for the mentally impaired. My questions are firstly should i ring the dwp and tell them that although he is very young minded (he hasnt really lead a normal life and has mild learning difficulties) with help he could manage his affairs, or just let the woman come round and see him, and secondly I've not received anything to say his money has been renewed, does the fact that they are sending someone round to see me mean they are leaning towards the award or not? Thanks for your help. Sharon
When she comes around she has to see and speak to him even if he then leaves the room while you do all the paper work she might even ask him questions
most people coming up to 16 are reassed the paper work is generated at the same time as the claimis being dealt with the dla blackpool have faxed the local office that sends out people for this and other visits it has nothing to do with the claim but if this paper work is not filled out in time and agreed they can not make payments
there is a good chance till she comes and talks to him and you she has no idea why he has a dla claim

Thank you Dave.
My pleasure if you have time before the visit there is one well known charity that gives advice on this matter ... I think its Mind could be wrong give them a call. You dont have to have mental health problems to have you do his forms, back in the old days when most people had order books you needed someone to go and get the cash for you if stuck in bed

Thanks again Dave, very much appreciated. I will get in touch with them and ask for their advice. Forewarned is forearmed as they say! (I think).

I don't think you will have a problem and know a few people who have in the last few years had children come to 16, on dla it seems to work like clockwork you must have filled in your DLA form as when that gets back, at that stage they would see the age and send the fax off. There is a lot of paperwork. One last thing make sure you have plenty of ID for both of you passports best but also things like water bill council tax or council tax benefit because they will want to be sure not just who you are but its your house if in doubt dont ring dla blackpool but look for the number on the paperwork they sent check if what you have will do the job... its hard sometime to show the child is who you say as being sick many dont have passports
