Unfortunately, we can't tell you whether your son will lose his benefits or not, but since he is already getting DLA and his condition has not improved you must have hope.

When you get the form, read our guides to filling it in. Include as much information as possible, such as any medical reports you have and any statements that people can make. (I sent in several.) It will all help the decision maker to make an accurate decision.

When you get the new claim pack, it would be a good time for your son to pop in and see his GP and make sure that the GP knows how he is doing. Perhaps he would let you go with him to help? You could draw the GP's attention to anything you know is relevant in the light of what you're putting on the form.

go to the RNIB web site because he cant see, if filled in correct MOST not all people with partialy sighted would get lower mobility and lower care as he cant make a meal and needs help getting around outside

the changes in mobility that come in next april mean he might get the higher rate and the people at RNIB will be able in some cases to tell you if his paper work from the drs has the right info for him to get the higher rate mobility, even if the paper work has not got enogh info they would ask his drs for the info they need

all this fuss over higher rate being given to blind people is not all its cracked over to be the way they have done it means its a mine field

some people on higher rate mobility might not get it when the rules change and others will

call the rnib as if you tell them what info you have they can advise you call

Hi Bobbie,

You must have missed the thread my wife Pat posted in the discussion forum last night:

Severe visually impaired can claim HRM of DLA

As Dave said the DLA will contact you soon, as is explained in Pat's thread.

Good luck :)

Jim

these are the people who will get higher

If your visual acuity is:

1.less than 3/60, meaning you only can read the top line of an eye test chart from 3 metres away, you will qualify for the higher rate

2.more than 3/60 but less than 6/60, meaning you can only read the top line of the eye test chart from 6 metres away, your visual field will need to be considered as well.

If your visual acuity falls into the second category, then you will only qualify if you also have both:

•a complete loss of your peripheral vision
•and severely restricted central vision ("tunnel vision"), meaning no more than 10 degrees in diameter.
If your visual acuity is better than 6/60 you will not qualify, for example if your acuity is 6/36 or 6/18.

What if my sight cannot be measured?
If your sight is too poor to be measured in this way, for example if you can only count fingers or you only have light and dark perception, you will qualify.
