A to Z of medical conditions
- John
- Topic Author
My appeal is not until 14th January but I have started preparing for it and gathered most of what i need but just putting some stuff together besides for it.
Myself and now my wife have medical conditions that are classed as (orphan illness's) and not in the A to Z and the conditions vary drastically between sufferer's.
I have Hidradenitis Suppurativa and my wife who has just been finished from work has Forrestier's disease also known as Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis...
Hopefully some of the moderators or members who have more knowledge of the system may have answers.
Thanks

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer, so other Mods may add to this response.
The Decision Maker is not medically qualified and will always defer to ATOS, as healthcare provider, where a medical opinion is required. Given the generality of the majority of the ATOS Health Care Professionals, I would suspect that there is a very good chance that they too will have no experience of these conditions.
In this case, the only option is for ATOS to to approach a Consultant with the relevant knowledge and ask for their opinion. If the illness is as rare as you suggest, this might actually be the same Consultant(s) you and your wife see!
In terms of presenting evidence to the Tribunal, it would be worth your while including details of your illness and its affects. However, I would be cautious in presenting information that is too bulky or uses language that the Tribunal may not be able to understand. Dependant on what is available, I would suggest a layered approach, with a summary that contains the facts you want the Tribunal to take into account, with more detailed information that can be referred to if required. Remember to use a reference system that you and the Tribunal can easily use.
I hope this helps

My original application was rejected with no medical, the only references they had was that of my gp (dla form) which he added the info but no details as such just mobility problems and other things along the lines of a form filling. They also had a very short report from an atos dr advising on the general condition which was rediculous but this is because he does not know....but they obviously accepted his opinion on the "average of the disease".
The illness Hidradenitis Suppurativa is classed in 3 stages 1,2,3 74% of people stay at stage 1, 25% stage 2 and only 1% go onto stage 3, I have it confirmed as stage 3. There is no cure just palliative care...unfortunately professionals tend to go for the average on these conditions that they know little about...
Thanks for the advice, I am going to try and get as much info as I can and condense it as much as possible so as not to send too much to them but the main points. I feel it is an uphill battle and I have to do everything I can to win and with some great help here I am going to be a little more hopeful.

One of the Tribunal panelist is usually a doctor, it is unlikely that he will have any more knowledge of your illness than any of the other doctors you have encountered, however, he will be in a position to challenge you in medical terms, so you need to be prepared to counter this.
I am sure you have already thought of this, but you should present evidence from your GP and consultant that confirms the effects of your condition. Remember, the Tribunal can only review evidence that is co-temporal with the decision you are appealing, so make sure that evidence is referenced back to or prior to this date.

What do the DM's or medical advisors use when conditions are not in the A to Z?

your wifes problem is rare and a consultants input would be of great help but yours is not rare but very under reported to dcotors because of how it affects people there must be say 2 millon with it in the usa alone and another 10 million who dont see there doc about it, in the uk 500,000 plus and i am 99% sure there is a support group ? ask them for help
your both going to have to educate the dla ib staff about your problems
