Pip award length was created by aliali
Hi how do I appeal award length, I received my pip enhanced rates which is good as I have an unchanging disabling condition, but they shrank my award time by 2 years. My first award was for life on DLA, then it moved to pip and I was given 6 years now my latest review I have been granted 5 years. It has been nearly a month since my award. Is there a way to contest award length ? I am not sure I will be able to cope going through this again in 4 years essentially. I really want a ten year award as others with my condition have been granted. Do I have to go to a tribunal or is there a way to challenge this as it is still just within 1 month of the date of the award Thanks

Hi aliali

You can put in for a Mandatory Reconsideration, but you need to make it very clear that you are satisfied with every other aspect of the award, other than the length. Be aware that there is a risk that they may review your entire award.

Award lengths have been shortened across the board, and they are issuing far fewer ten-year awards than they were before. Very few people are successful in increasing the award length, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Emphasise the fact that your condition is unchanging.

I’ve not long asked them for a reconsideration of my PIP award length. I sent evidence to show my condition is considered permanent and they increased my award length from 4 to 10 years! I was pretty shocked, I expected them to just add a year or 2. I did say I agreed with the points given and just wished to protest the length but they still looked at the whole thing again. So, it was a risk but it can be done. Good luck

Hi,

If I may....

My girlfriend was in a similar situation, so we requested a Mandatory Reconsideration to review the length of the award. The result was the award going from 3 years to 10 years.

The following, with the omission of name and address, is the actual content of the MR sent:

Dear Sir / Madam

Request for Mandatory Reconsideration

I am writing to ask you to reconsider your decision dated 25th October 2021 about my Personal Independence Payment claim.
I had very little help when completing my PIP application, therefore when I was awarded a date limited award I wasn`t aware that I could appeal the length of that award. I have now been advised that I can appeal the length of the award, therefore I would like you to consider the following:

Daily Living Activities
Not contested.

Mobility Activities
Not contested.

Length of award
Contested.

I have been diagnosed with Parkinsonism; this is an incurable, and progressive, medical condition.
I wish to contest the date of 10th October 2024 on the basis that my condition will not improve nor will I get better.

Yours faithfully
