How can I respond when someone asks me personal questions. I have an unseen disability, (until it's not) epilepsy, and people often make wild assumptions. I work part time to manage it. How can I respond to people's nosey questions about me being on benefits without being rude? They'll often do it in work. I work in hospitality. I feel under pressure to answer.

Hi Treehugger

Your question is outside the scope of this forum, but I will tell you what I think.

I'm sorry you feel pressured to answer questions. We can't control what other people say (unless, of course, it is so bad you have to put in a formal complaint), but we can work on ourselves. You can decide not to allow what an ignorant person is saying to upset you. Smile and move on. It is no one's business whether you are on benefits, and if someone asks you, tell them politely that you don't discuss your personal business at work or with strangers.

If they are horrible, imagine them dressed in a pink bunny outfit and eating a large carrot. If they are that nosey, you will start to think of them as the ridiculous people they are.

When you want to scream or cry, ask yourself: Are these people worth one minute of my energy? No, they aren't, and please, please work on dismissing these idiots from your mind. I know it's not easy, but you can do it.

or an alternative visualisation I heard of was to imagine them seated where you go when nature calls...whatever enables you to dismiss them. Pinocchio is another one, maybe they aren't lying but they're certainly what Italians call a 'naso lungo'!!!
