welfare reform bill

Just read on another site that the Lords have postponed the 2nd reading of the Welfare Reform bill untill 2ns September. Apparantly it's got something to do with the impact these changes will have on claimants. Has anyone else heard this & do you think it means a rethink on limiting contribution based ESA to 1 Year and Universal benefit etc.

It will depend if the concerns expressed by (a) House of Lords (b) concerned national organisations (c) MP's amount to sufficient pressure to cause a rethink

I think the problem for claimants is this time there is a huge consensus in parliament and the country aided by the media

It is a lot to hope for that they will rethink, but I am sure there WILL be a time limit on ESA contrib based

elainegem, I too have seen that somewhere on another site, but I didn't really understand it! I think I read it was a 'call for evidence' and I think they are going over most things like ESA,UC, DLA, HB amongst other things but i'm not sure cos I didn't understand it!. It will be on the DWP or Directgov websites (not sure if i'm allowed to say that!)

I agree Xfactor, there is a huge (and very unfair) consensus in parliament and the country aided by the media! They just don't understand! They should put themselves in our shoes, with our money (or lack of it!) and see how hard it is to 'live'. I predict more deaths either through starvation or suicide!

You're either fit to work or you're not - you can't have different levels of being able to work.

The government's argument that the support group means they are continuing to support the most severely disabled is nonsenscial. This is not the purpose of income replacement benefits. That issue should be dealt with instead through disabilty benefits. The government are only too happy to tell us that just because someone gets DLA doesn't mean they are not fit to work.

If they really must save money on ESA then maybe they should change the contribution conditions like they did in Ireland.
