The AA works for some people, not others, just like any form of coping strategy. I've come across many people who've become sober through AA but I've yet to come across anyone who assumes that it's right for everyone.
Self-help groups are common in relation to many conditions. Some are predicated on belief in a higher power, some aren't. Just as part of the population believes in a higher power and part doesn't, so part of the population will find a support group network based on belief in a higher power helpful and part won't.
As the saying goes, you pays your money, you makes your choice.
