GP Letter For ESA Appeal was created by WSK
Hi Everyone,

I have an appointment with my GP on Friday to get him to write a letter of support for my appeal to be put back into the Support Group (recent ATOS med put me in WRAG) which I will send with my GL24.

I have a couple of questions:

1. To whom should the GP address this letter, or can it just be a “To Whom It May Concern”?

2. Is it ok for my GP to actually state that they do not believe I should be in the WRAG because of XYZ, and then conclude at the end that he believes I should be in the Support Group until I have a “significant and sustained improvement in my symptoms” or will this be perceived as I have “coerced” my GP? Would it be better for him not to make any reference to the ESA?

I spoke to him on the phone last night and he asked me to draft what I wanted put in the letter!

1. "To whom it may concern" should be fine.

2. Remember that entry to the Support Group is the result of demonstrating that you meet one or more of the criteria.

As such, a general statement such as "significant and sustained improvement in my symptoms" will carry less weight than "I believe that my patient meets the xyz Support Group criteria for these reasons".

Hi Gordon,

I understand. In fact my opening sentence is “I have today met with and reviewed X, who was accompanied by her husband, and can state that she is neither fit to attend work focused interviews nor carry out work related activities, either of which would result in the worsening of her symptoms and the prolonging of their duration, and could substantially increase her risk of injury.”

I then go on to list all my formal diagnosis, the symptoms they cause, what they prevent me doing, how often they prevent me doing it, how my husband has to do all the household chores, my forthcoming operation, and then conclude with:

“For all these reasons I believe that X should be placed back in the Support Group and should remain there until a significant and sustained improvement of her symptoms is confirmed.”

The body of the letter addresses descriptors 1,2,3,9 and 10 and overall I'm hoping that the letter ticks the "exceptional circumstances" box.

Should that do the trick?

It's not me that you have to convince, but the Decision Maker :)

Too true! But I welcome opinions as to whether this is a good approach.
