After University

Has anyone else been through the system after completing a degree?

My partner has just completed a degree course, funded mostly by bursaries. I have been in receipt of Income support during this time, which was only a pitifull amount.

Now at the end of his degree, I asked for advice from Direct Gov/Job Centre and have just received a letter saying I have to claim job seekers allowance. Is this right?

They have stopped my payments and we have no money coming in at all.

As always letters come through on a Saturday, leaving you worried to death all weekend.

Can anyone advise???

The benefits to which you/your partner may be entitled, will depend very much on your personal circumstances.

There is a website which includes a benefit calculator. You may find useful and it is entitled Turn2us.

Well the awnser is yes I did a 3 year Arts degree at UEA back at the end of the 1970s when doing a degree etc was still high status and trendy.
So yes I have been through the Higher educational system.
Unfortunately I stepped straight out into the greatest Recession since 1929.
1979-80 was NOT a good year to be looking at starting a career.
CVs were not worth the paper they were written on.
After several employers and an aborted career in The Govt.(constructive dismissal by lies in order to make cutbacks on younger and more vulnerable staff)things looked pretty grim.
I formed the impression that much of the employment market in this country was A CLOSED SHOP stuck in The Victorian Era.
Hoplessley dim.
It is still so today.
Arts degrees have nothing to do with a Real Job (Thank Goodness).
This is because a Degree has its roots in 19th Century Aristocratic University Privelege where reading poetry all day on a chaise longue tended to by Scivvies and University Servants and where one University-Cambridge-served 14 million people of East London and East Anglia
was an elitist hobby for the mega rich.
The curriculum has not changed!
The clientele barely,
My advice?
Disregard your degree sunject.
Your one advantage is your more intelligent and creative so find your way
by yourself.
Who knows you could be another Bill Gates!
