I'm sorry that you are so poorly, and have a household and children to care for. I have a similar list of ailments and have just received a Total Incapacity Benefit ill Health retirement pension from the Teachers Pension Agency. You will find all the information and forms on the www.teacherspensions.co.uk website. I didn't find my union NASUWT particularly useful and I was still a full member. you really need a very supportive letter from your consultant and lots of reports from him to your GP, with a report also from your GP. The forms are on the website. You will need to register with your Teacher Reference number and passwords etc, but it is worth the effort. TIB will give you an enhanced pension which comprises an additional number of years service. However, this income may have an effect on all of your other benefits which are income related. Good luck

Hi Janet Sorry to hear you are in such a poor state of health. I also claimed Ill Health Teachers Pension and eventually won on 2nd appeal. If there is any way of contacting each other privately, I would be happy to share my experience in case it would help. Perhaps someone could advise on how we do this. Take care Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Regretfully, the forum personal messaging facility isn't working at the moment. This happened after the forum software was upgraded recently, and our Tech Support are still working on getting it up and running again.

I'll wait and see if Janet wishes to contact you privately, and perhaps it would be possible to ask Steve if he'd be willing to let you both e-mail him and exchange e-mail addresses with each other.

Hi Janet,

R U still in employment on 1/2 pay or pension rate of pay. When you say Ill health Retirement I take it you are still employed or Is it that you can apply to the trustees of your pension scheme.

Just to give you a bit of an idea where I was with mine years ago. I was refused Medical Retirement initially because the company policy was that the condition had to be permanent.

The criteria was...Current evidence must indicate that the condition is likely to be permanent, and the employee is unlikely to give regular and efficient service in the duties of her/his own grade, and no suitable alternative employment can be found in the same grade.

To cut a long story short, I was already released on the grounds of efficiency because I was off on long term sick. I had lodged unfair dismissal and breach of contract with the industrial tribunal.

After 2 years fighting, the company settled with me out of court and the trustees then gave me my pension but it was at a deferred rate. It was a two year fight for me, but at that time I was in receipt of contribution based IB and it wasnt affected by my pension amount.

Nowadays it appears that this does affect sickness payments so as firbird has said, it may affect your other benefits, and I would also urge you to really consider what it may cost you in the long run.

Hope you get sorted

Kathy

Hi Janet,

The forums are accessible by guests as well as members, so we don't recommend that you post your e-mail address in an open forum, otherwise you'll be deluged with junk mail.

In my earlier post this is what I suggested to Wendy :

Regretfully, the forum personal messaging facility isn't working at the moment. This happened after the forum software was upgraded recently, and our Tech Support are still working on getting it up and running again.

If you and Wendy e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your e-mail addresses, he can e-mail each others to you so you can contact each other.

Hopefully, the Personal Messaging System will be fixed soon so members can contact each other without all this hassle.

Best wishes.

Pat

Hmmmm food for thought! I suppose I have in mind the lump sum which I'm hoping would buy my husband out of our house.. Which is an ideally located bungalow n all set up to help me in my restricted abilities etc!

If I find out all the info I'll decide which is best to do!

Thanks for the excellent advice!
