ESA to Universal Credit Migration was created by dazzlelight
Hi im currently in the ESA support group and for Christmas this year the the DWP have given me a Universal Credit managed migration letter. Which was very kind of them...
Can anyone tell me what documents etc do I need to get together before I tackle this. How many months bank statement etc. Do I need my old esa letters (No idea where they are) for transitional protection?
How long does it take to do the actual applying online part, from start to finish. Can you save things and go back or do u have to do it all in one sitting?
when is best time to claim if there is one? Do you have to complete the process within the 3 month deadline or just start it? I am trying to put it off for as long as possible as i just can't face it. But not sure if that's wise.
I also can't leave the house so am worrying about jobcentre interviews appointments etc.
Sorry for so many questions. Bit overwhelmed at the moment now. Thanks for any help

Hi dazzlelight

To answer your questions would depend how good you are with computers and if you have a Gateway account.

If you are computer literate then applying for UC will be a breeze. When UC first came out you could not save anything you had to do it all in one hit, but things are different now, you can save as you go along.

If you struggle with computers then I would advise you to seek help in the first instance. Citizen Advice have a Government contract to help claimants apply for UC

You can contact an adviser through their free Help to Claim phone service. Advisers are available 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday:

England: 0800 144 8 444

Scotland: 0800 023 2581

Wales: 08000 241 220

To apply online you’ll need:

your bank, building society or credit union account details
an email address
access to a phone
If you do not have these, you can call the Universal Credit helpline or go to a jobcentre. You can also get support from the Citizens Advice Help to Claim service.

You’ll also have to prove your identity. You’ll need some identity documents for this, for example your:

~ driving licence
~ passport
~ debit or credit card
~ payslip or P60

To complete your claim you will need to provide information about:

~ your housing, for example how much rent you pay
~ your earnings, for example payslips
~ your National Insurance number, if you have one
~ other benefits you get
~ any disability or health condition that affects your work
~ how much you pay for childcare if you want help with childcare costs
~ your savings and any investments, like shares or a property that you rent out

Thanks Gary. I wouldn't say I'm computer savy but I might just make it based on what u said so that's a positive. Do you know how many months bank statements do u need, I keep hearing about people needing to provide months sometimes years worth of bank statements which I can't do as filing isn't my forte. Equaly previous esa letters to prove I was on esa. Thanks

Hi dazzlelight

I can not see why you would need to provide bank statements apart from proving your identity, LA's usually ask for 3 when when they want to verify your claim, I would therefore assume the same unless your background is complicated.🤔

Hi dazzlelight

Sorry, I should not use acronyms, I some times forget, LA stands for Local Authority.

I can remember when the verification frame work was introduced by LA's, they required 3 months bank statements for each account a claimant held when applying for housing or council tax benefit..
