PIP mobility review refusals near retirement age was created by Alexandj11
Hi there,
I have recently noticed a number pip renewals being reduced by the mobility component as applicants approach retirement age. Am I correct in my suspicion that DWP are using ageist tactics to reduce pip awards at the review stage???
Thanks

Hi Alexandj11
I can't say whether it is a deliberate tactic or not, but no one can have their mobility award increased once they reach State Pension Age. So if it is downgraded at a review and they don't put in for an MR - it can never be increased at a later review.

Thank you. That’s what I thought . Many people may not realise the significance of failing to request a mandatory reconsideration at this point. I’ve supported 3 recent renewed award cases where all lost their mobility component where they approached retirement age within the next 4/5 years and within their nearly renewed award. In All three cases the claimants didn’t feel they had the physical and mental energy to take things further. I’d be interested to know the stats on DWP refusing the mobility component within a 5 year retirement age point of someone’s continuing claim compared to mobility renewals for younger applicants.

Hi Alexandj11
I suspect that is a statistic that the DWP would not admit keeping!
