I'm 75 and have had highest rate PIP for both c are and mobility since 1985 when it was DLA. My husband now has to care for me full time. I can't leave the house without help. He's 78 obviously on state pension but also gets a fairly small works pension. I know nothing at all about carers alllowance. Can he apply? Is it means tested? WIll it affect my P IP in any way. I also get state pension and a very small work pension. I can't find any g uides on the site at all about carer's allowance

Hi Norder

We don't deal with carers' allowance - hence no guides. There's no upper age limit for claiming carers' allowance - however a person can't claim carers' allowance and their state pension at the same time. However, it's possible he might be able to get additional money for his caring role - which is called an underlying entitlement. Carer's UK has a very good explanation of what someone can claim. www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/financi...plus-other-benefits/

PIP is not a means-tested benefit - so if your husband was awarded money, it doesn't have an impact on your PIP

Hi norder

Your husband can apply for Carers Allowance but he will not receive anything as it is an overlapping benefit with his state pension, but he would get an underlying entitlement to carers allowance, as BIS has pointed out in her post.

Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible to claim guarantee pension credit, an underlying entitlement would give you an extra premium when working out GPC entitlement.

I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation: advicelocal.uk they will be able to take all your circumstances into consideration.
