Hi
I am filling in a PIP2 form for my nephew. The query is regarding activity 4 Washing and Bathing.
He has major psychological issues which means he cannot sleep properly, nightmares, and a completely dysfunctional daily life. His food and other self-care areas are all shot. He can go a fortnight or more not doing his teeth, never washes his face unless by accident when in the shower. He only tends to wash either his lower or upper body and not both at the same time, this being done by flannel, but he is not physically restricted. This is entirely psychological.
He needs prompting from his partner daily to do any of the above, but even so only manages to shower at most once every few weeks. The 'flannel washes' of either upper or lower body are along the lines of once a week to ten days apart. He has no interest in life and is only doing this for his partner.
Which of these matters? Is it the fact he is psychologically impaired on an everyday basis, which is why he no longer washes as he once did, or is it the fact that his partner can only talk him into 'showering' after a month or so? The second would essentially mean he needs the prompting only on approximately 12 days a year as it is only at those points where he is forced enough to shower. The more reasonable approach is obviously that people, in normal psychological or physical health, will providing it is not for simple laziness, shower at least daily or perhaps every other day.
This would mean his permanent psychological problems are there for the entire time, but can only be broken into at monthly intervals for showers. Does he meet the criteria for PIP's 'majority of the time' based on his need to shower but psychologically imposed inability to. Or does he fail it as the 'prompting' and/or 'assistance' he has for showering only gets to be accepted monthly?
It seems a pointless exercise to consider 'Daily Living' activities as such, if they are allowed to be completed only once a month.

If his partner only prompts him 12 days a year then yes, it will be a problem but it sounds more to me that they prompt him daily but it might be only once a month that he responds to those prompts and showers, this would meet the majority of days requirement.
