Hi,
Thanks for the clarification.
I have submitted a claim for carers allowance online.
Wife has had a letter informing her that an application has been made, but as yet I've heard nothing.
Another query I have is
As its taken off our IR ESA £ for £
Will I actually be paid anything in my own name or will it be just the carers premium added to our fortnightly ESA?

Hi alfwithair58

If you apply for Carers Allowance and are successful then you will receive £76.75 pw this amount will be deducted from your wife's ESA but she will then get an additional carers premium £42.75 pw.

In total you will be £42.75 pw better off.

Well no letters, emails or phone calls from any department, but a strange payment of £124 went in to our account this morning under the ref EESA with wife NI number. ....
Very odd as our next payment of IR ESA is not due till next Thursday.
Has anyone had similar experience?
I just hope the claim for CA hasn't been looked upon as change of circumstances, closed her ESA claim and triggered a UC claim.

A claim for CA cannot cause this.

Now recieved a letter from ESA.
Apparently the payment was arrears from 7th April to 27th April.
Their explaination is as clear as mud, dates and amount explanation for different dates
One of which says
"Extra money because you are a carer"
It's me that the carer, not her?
Then says from 28th April will get same amount as we do anyway.
Then drops to £171.90
Which if added to the carers allowance does make us 42.75 a week better off as you stated.
But says this is from 15th September ?
Thats 2 months away and no mention of any back payments as put the carers claim from 4th April.
Maybe some further clarification will come to light when the carers allowance department write.
Tried ringing but like always, like waiting for a lottery win

Things can get muddy with CA and ESA as the backdating of the CA creates an overpayment of the CA but also an underpayment of the Carers Premium.

As you say, you need to see the CA letter before you can do anything to untangle it, although you hopefully won't need to.
