Made the call to ATOS re: expected date of my medical assessment, as they received my form on the 18th nov, still not heard. Anyway, called them earlier................ they said they are waiting for an appointment to become available!........... is this normal for a PIP application?

As I understand it they only have a rolling three week window for appointments so it is possible that they do not have any openings within that timescale. Although lots of claimants cancel they do tend to do this on the day before their appointment so there is no opportunity for them to make use of these as they are required to give seven days written notice.
Although it is only just December we may also be seeing the Christmas effect starting to bite.
